Uefa Champion League Quarter Finals
The first leg of the quarter final of the UEFA Champions League kick started on Tuesday with
teams from Germany, France, England and Spain still left in the competition.
These are the things we learnt from the matches played in the first leg of the quarter
final.
Manchester United
Better Than Arsenal
Despite everything going on at Old Trafford, it is
surprising to see a headline like this one. Manchester United's performance
against the reigning champions of the UEFA Champions League ranks among their
best this season, or dare I say is their best performance this season? Every
player on the pitch fought for the team, they tracked back and went forward
together and that made things easy for them.
But after Welbeck losed what
seemed like a clear goal when he was faced with only beating Neur at goal
(well, good work from Neur,he is the best at what he does) you would have
expected them to drop their heads and their performance level also dropping but
that never happened.
Unlike Arsenal who have time and time again self
destructed after things like that happening, like after the Ozil's penalty loss
against Bayern, after conceding early goals against Liverpool and Chelsea, the
list goes on and on. Wenger always talk up his team's strong mental strength but
it seems it is his rivals that have got it more. Arsenal also have to start
thinking of Manchester United winning the Champions League cos if that happens,
finishing fourth would not be enough for an entry into the Champions League for
the 18th consecutive time.
Athletico Madrid
Should Not Be Underrated
Athletico Madrid seem to be over performing this season,
leading the La Liga with a point and with 6 games to go, you can't bet against
them winning the title for the first time in a while and they are not also
disappointing in the UEFA Champions League too. Winning their group by a margin
and defeating European giants, AC Milan in the round of 16, doing all this
under the watch of tactical flexible Diego Simeone.
Now faced with the task of
eliminating a Messi led Barcelona team, they didn't disappoint again at the
Camp Nou. Getting a vital away goal at the Camp Nou in the first leg of the
quarter finals of the competition (doing this for most of the time without top
scorer, Diego Costa), they head into the second leg with the advantage on their
side and this side don't look like stopping here. They want the trophy too!
