Is Valencia's Andre Felipe Tavares Really Worth £42 Million?
BY EWAH CHIKA
One Valencia player that has seen his name linked virtually with
every top Premier League club this summer even with the disgraceful performance
of Los Che last season is no one but Portuguese Andre Felipe Tavares Gomes.
At 22, Gomes has seen his stock rise astronomically even though he has only played two seasons at the Mestella. The former Benfica star joined Valencia permanently last season for an undisclosed fee after a long season loan in the 2014/2015 season. The attacking midfielder is now valued at £42 million by Valencia who claim he is indispensable. Gomes was part of Jorge Jesus' squad that won Benfica's historic first ever treble in the 2013/2014 season also reaching the Europa League final after beating Antonio Conte's Juventus and losing on penalties to Unai Emery's Sevilla.
The Portuguese shares the same agent with Manchester United's Jose Mourinho (Jorge Mendes) and this might be one of the reasons why he is wanted by Manchester United. Last season, Gomes scored three goals in 30 La Liga games , creating 26 chances with a 54% shot accuracy and a pass accuracy of 81%. It was not much different in his first season where he scored four goals in 33 La Liga games. However, he fared better in European competitions where he scored one goal in four games in the Champions League and also one goal and one assist in three Europa League games.
The attacking midfielder can play in various positions which include, central midfield in a traditional 4-4-2 formation, forward right or forward left in a 4-3-3 formation and attacking midfield which is slightly behind the main striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation . The Portuguese has an impeachable dribbling ability coupled with his eye for key passes. Also to be known is his confidence and calmness even in tight situations which is rare for a youngster in a top league like the La Liga. Gomes is already a regular starter in the Portuguese national team and this becomes more obvious when one considers that even Renato Sanches (attaching midfielder and similar position ) who was signed for a fee in excess of €35 million by Bayern Munich this summer sits on the bench. Though his £42 million price tag is mind blowing, if one considers the player's age , perfect footwork , already inflated transfer market which is no fault of his and his existing contract which will expire in 2020, then one will realise why the midfielder is valued so high.
One flaw of the player is the fact that his crossing leaves a lot to be desired coupled with his poor tackling. This is nothing compared with his lack of urgency when on the field which has seen him sacrificed whenever his team is chasing the game. This will be a major concern for any coach who is considering signing him as it is a difficult thing trying to work on a player's mental state unlike the physical aspect which could easily be worked on.
With this major flaw, it is difficult to see how he will fit in at Chelsea if signed as Antonio Conte demands a lot from his players with his energetic high pressing game which requires hard tackling , aggressive chasing of the opponents and trying to counter the opponent when ever they retrieve possession. Also this is the same story with Jose Mourinho who doesn't necessarily play high-pressing football but requires desire, determination and zeal from his players in any position on the field.
Finally although , Gomes possesses the talent of a champion at an early age of 22 displaying that week in week out on a daily basis in a major league like the Spanish La Liga, he will have to work on his mental state and finishing which accounts for his poor stat. Whether or not the Portuguese is worth the price quoted by Valencia is a discussion for another day as £42 million is a fee that could be used to build a mid-table team in the Spanish La Liga.
