Was Getting Di Maria The Right Move For Man United?

By Adedayo Ayodele

Why not? I mean.. Have you seen United's squad lately? And you're still going to say they don't need Di Maria? Come on!

Sport journalists who seem to appear outraged at the "frightening" transfer fee manchester manchester united are paying for Di Maria just sound bitter to me. Nobody has uttered a word about the Suarez fee to Barcelona even though he's a liability and has spent large chunks of his career serving suspensions.

One minute the Glazers are the worst in the world, bleeding the club dry and not investing in the squad and the next minute they are paying crazy money. You can't have it both ways but it is clear they need to sign world class players to replace the likes of Keane, Ronaldo, Scholes, Vidic and Giggs.

These players have not been replaced but I trust Van Gaal to identify the best players when building a new squad. There is no doubting Di Maria's quality and he is the sort of player that Manchester United should be buying when you are the biggest club in the world. He isn't the answer to all their problems but he will form part of the solution.

They have invested in a new long term Left Back in Shaw, Central Wing Back in Rojo and Central Midfielder in Hererra. Given time these players will become vital to the team and get them back to winning ways. Of course, I also think they need at least another Central Back and defensive midfielder, Hummels, Vidal and Strootman would be great but the reality is you can't get them all.

They also need to remove the dead wood from the squad and this will take time as Van Gaal has given everyone a fair crack of the whip. Given time I have no doubt they will evolve and probably settle with a 4-3-3 formation. This is a process and I trust Van Gaal to get them back on track.
